All four are inexpensive relative to the appliance, all four are reachable without removing the fridge, and all four are finished in a single visit. That covers the majority of no-cooling calls.

On a coach running a pair of tired lead-acid batteries it converts a fridge problem into an electrical one, and the fridge stops every time the bank sags. The conversion is not the expensive part - the electrical system behind it is.

What does access do to the price?

More than the parts do, on some coaches, and it is the variable owners never see coming.

A fridge that slides out through its opening after the trim and a few screws are removed is a straightforward job. One that was installed before the cabinetry around it, or that is larger than the doorway it has to pass through, is not.

On some coaches the answer involves removing a window or part of a cabinet run to get the old unit out and the new one in. That is hours of careful work at both ends, and it applies whichever route you choose.

It is worth asking about specifically when comparing quotes. Two prices for the same fridge can differ substantially and both be honest, because one of them has seen the coach. A quote given over the phone without seeing the coach is a guess on this one variable, however honest the person giving it.

How long does each option last in Florida?

Less than the same equipment would last further north, and the gap between the options narrows because of it.

Heat is what wears an absorption system. A cooling unit that would give many years in a cooler state is working harder here every day, and a coach that sits in the sun with a partly blocked flue is working it harder still.

That is the strongest argument for the conversion in this climate: a compressor fridge does not care about ambient temperature in the same way, and it does not care about being slightly off level either.

Vent maintenance changes the number more than the brand does. A fridge with a clear flue, a working vent fan and a shaded sidewall outlives an identical one without them by a wide margin. Whichever route you take, the vent work in the next section is what protects the investment.

What is worth doing while the fridge is out?

Everything behind it, because the access you have paid for is the expensive part and you only have it once.

The flue and roof vent get cleared and screened. The vent fan gets fitted or replaced if there is one. The gas line connection gets checked and pressure tested when it goes back.

The floor and wall behind the fridge get inspected while they are visible. That cavity is a common place for a slow leak to sit unnoticed, and finding it with the appliance out costs nothing extra.

None of that is upselling - it is work that is trivial now and awkward later. Ask for it explicitly if it is not offered. Doing it later means paying for the same access twice, which is the most avoidable expense in this whole job.

How do you decide, in the end?

By how long you intend to keep the coach and how you actually use it, rather than by the price of the parts.

A coach you plan to keep for years, used off hookups, with a decent electrical system, points at the conversion. A coach used on shore power at campgrounds, with a fridge that is otherwise healthy, points at the cooling unit.

A coach you intend to sell within a year or two points at the cheapest route that works, because none of these adds much at resale beyond making the coach saleable at all.
