Gray Tank Gate Valve Failures - Valterra T1001 and Slide Valve Repair Guide
The Valterra T1001 3-inch slide gate valve is the most common RV tank dump valve, installed on gray and black tanks on the majority of Forest River, Keystone, Coachmen, and Jayco rigs built since 2010. It uses a flat plastic T-bar slider that moves perpendicular to the pipe flow to open and close the port. The failure mode we see most often is the ABS T-bar fracturing at the rod weld point after 5 to 10 years of use - the result of forcing the valve closed against a partially blocked port or from UV degradation of the plastic body. When the T-bar shears, the handle turns freely with no resistance in both directions and the valve stays permanently open. The valve is not repairable. We install the stainless version as standard on any replacement because the labor to do a second replacement in 5 years is more expensive than the $18 part upgrade.
Black Tank Sensor Probe Cleaning and Replacement - The Lippert 389382 System
Tank-level sensors in RV black tanks are one of the most universally misunderstood components in the RV industry, and virtually every full-time RV owner has accepted inaccurate sensor readings as normal. The Lippert 389382 probe set are stainless steel probes that penetrate the tank wall at 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and full-level positions. Each probe completes a circuit when it contacts waste water and sends a resistance signal to the monitor panel. When solid waste coats the probe tip with an insulating layer of hardened solids, the probe reads a false positive (full) regardless of actual level. Macerator Pump Service and Vent Stack Cleaning
Macerator pumps are the most complex component in the tank system and the most expensive to replace. The Sealand 12V macerator (part 385320651) and the Flojet 18555-000A are the two most common units. What should I flush down the black tank to keep it healthy?
Only human waste and RV-safe single-ply toilet paper.
