Acrylic vs. Polycarbonate Skylight Domes in Florida UV Conditions
Standard RV skylight domes are injection-molded from either cast acrylic (PMMA) or polycarbonate (PC). Both materials start at 85-92% visible light transmission when new, but they degrade at very different rates under Florida UV exposure. Cast acrylic without UV stabilization yellows within 3-5 years in Florida outdoor exposure, dropping to 40-60% light transmission as the polymer oxidizes. UV-stabilized acrylic (available from JR Products and Camco in replacement dome options) extends that to 6-8 years before visible yellowing. Polycarbonate is inherently more UV-resistant, and most current-production OEM skylights use polycarbonate rather than acrylic - though many replacement parts sold at RV supply stores are still cast acrylic. The critical difference beyond yellowing is impact resistance: polycarbonate has 30-50x the impact resistance of acrylic at equivalent thickness. A golf ball-sized hailstone shatters a 1/8-inch cast acrylic dome and may only dent a polycarbonate dome of the same thickness. Jesse Earl recommends polycarbonate replacement domes for all Florida skylight replacements regardless of what the original was made from, accepting the marginal cost premium for significantly better durability.
When the Entire Skylight Frame Needs Replacement vs. Dome Only
The base frame of a roof skylight is the structural component that anchors to the roof deck and receives the sealant bead. Frames are typically made from ABS plastic or aluminum. ABS plastic frames crack and warp in Florida heat over 8-10 years, particularly around the latch points where stress concentrates. An aluminum frame is essentially permanent - the only reason to replace an aluminum frame is physical damage from a falling object. To test whether a frame needs replacement: press firmly on all four corners of the frame while it is mounted on the roof. A frame that deflects more than 1/4 inch or produces cracking sounds at the corner joints is structurally compromised. A dome-only replacement on a failing frame produces a repeat leak within 12-18 months as the frame warps further and opens the sealant bond. The complete skylight assembly (frame plus dome) for a standard 14x14 unit costs $65-$110 from Ventline or Camco - only slightly more than a dome-only replacement, and the correct choice whenever the frame shows deformation or cracking.

RV: 2015 Keystone Cougar 327RES • Location: Myakka River State Park, Site 33 • City:
Symptom: Owner reported the bathroom skylight had turned dark amber-yellow, admitting very little light. During the last storm, water had entered at the skylight rear flange and dripped directly into the shower pan. The skylight dome had a 4-inch hairline crack running from the rear hinge to the center of the dome.
Diagnosis: Jesse inspected the skylight (Ventline SL1400 14x14 inch single-dome, flush mount). The dome had yellowed to approximately 40% light transmission (from the original 85%) from UV degradation of the cast acrylic. The 4-inch crack at the rear hinge was a structural failure - the dome had become too brittle to flex under hinge tension and had split. The base flange showed sealant failure at the rear edge: a 6-inch section where the Dicor bead had cracked and separated, creating the water entry path confirmed by water staining on the flange interior face.
- 1. Removed the cracked Ventline SL1400 dome by releasing the two front latch clips and unclipping the rear hinge wire; dome came off in two pieces due to the crack.
- 2. Inspected the Ventline SL1400 base frame - no cracks or deformation found; the base was reusable. Ordered and installed a Ventline SL1400 replacement dome (P/N BV0062-02, clear acrylic) which snaps directly onto the existing base frame.
- 3. Removed all cracked sealant from the base frame flange with a plastic scraper and Dicor RP-RC-1C cleaner, cleaning down to bare EPDM membrane and bare aluminum flange.
- 4. Applied Dicor RP-LPS-1C self-leveling lap sealant to the full perimeter of the base frame flange - 3/8-inch bead on the horizontal roof surface and a second bead at the base frame-to-membrane junction on all four sides.
- 5. Installed the new dome on the base frame, verified both front latch clips fully engaged and the hinge wire seated in the rear hinge boss without tension on the dome body.
- 6. Ran a hose test directed at the skylight for 5 minutes from all four sides - no water entry into shower pan observed. Owner confirmed the bathroom interior was significantly brighter immediately.
