Florida Water Quality and Ice Maker Scale Buildup

Central Florida groundwater sourced from the Floridan Aquifer averages 180-350 ppm total dissolved solids (TDS), primarily calcium carbonate and magnesium sulfate. Coastal campgrounds sourced from municipal water often add chloramine treatment that also contributes to scale formation at water fixture orifices. An ice maker's water distribution nozzle - typically a 0.025-0.035 inch orifice - is among the smallest water flow restrictions in the coach, and calcium carbonate scale deposits on the nozzle at a rate approximately proportional to TDS concentration. At 280 ppm TDS (the Bill Frederick Park reading in the case above), an unfiltered ice maker will begin to show restricted fill times within 18-24 months. At 350 ppm TDS (found at some coastal sites near Sarasota and Naples using older distribution systems), the same restriction appears within 9-12 months. The correct preventive measure is an inline scale-reduction filter rated for 1 GPM or less at the ice maker supply line - not a softener or reverse osmosis system, which are not suited for the low-flow, intermittent demand of an ice maker. Ice Maker Motor Module vs. Water Inlet Valve - How to Distinguish the Fault

Two components fail in RV ice makers with roughly equal frequency: the water inlet valve (which controls water entry) and the ice maker motor module (which controls the ejector, harvest heater, and thermostat). Distinguishing them is straightforward with basic test steps. Water inlet valve failure produces an ice maker that runs its cycle but produces no ice (or produces hollow half-shells): the ejector cycles normally, but the mold never fills because the valve does not open. Test the valve coil resistance (spec 195-210 ohms for Samsung DA97-07603A) and apply 120V directly to confirm it opens mechanically. Motor module failure produces an ice maker that does not cycle at all - the mold may be full of water but the ejector never actuates. Test the module by pressing the test button: if no eject cycle follows within 10 seconds, the module (Samsung P/N DA97-05422A) is suspect. If the mold is partially frozen and the ejector jams, the thermal overload has tripped - this is a protection event, not a component failure, and is cured by the thermal reset procedure described in the case study above. Case Study: Ice Maker Repair Repair

1. 1. Reset the ice maker thermal overload by pressing the test/reset button (recessed, accessible with a toothpick through the hole on the ice maker front panel) for 3 seconds - ice maker cycled through one test eject, confirming the motor and ejector mechanism were intact.
